What springs to mind when you think of Alabama? Locals will tell you all about their unique and world-famous Southern hospitality, their sweet tea, Alabama’s music scene, it’s contribution to southern literature and the fact it’s home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in North America. It’s also where the American Civil war began.

With so much to take in and experience, a visit to Alabama is one that is guaranteed to take your breath away. But with so much to do and see, how you can be sure you’ll make the most of your time in this famous state?

Here we’ll explore some pieces of advice that all visitors should remember.

Be wary of Alabama’s backroads

Alabama is home to some of the very best scenic drives in the US. And there’s no better way to take in the natural beauty of the Yellow Hammer state than by an old fashioned road trip.

While these backroads are breathtaking, visitors should exercise caution when driving on unfamiliar roads. Road accidents are common here, and the last thing you want is to find yourself caught up in a car crash whilst exploring the state – speak with PI lawyers from Mobile if you’ve been injured in a crash that wasn’t your fault. From the Lookout Mountain Parkway to the Leeds Stagecoach route, always research your journey before you hit the road.

Watch out for wildlife!

Whether you’re avoiding herds of fallow deer crossing the roads, or spotting wild mountain lions (also known as cougars) in the wilderness, Alabama is home to plenty of wildlife that will get you excited. You may also come across alligators, turtles and snakes and beautiful birds. So whether you’re an avid wildlife watcher or you’re an aspiring game hunter, Alabama has plenty to offer.

Don’t be intimidated by the accent

If you’ve never heard a true Southern drawl before, you may find it a little intimidating and even difficult to get your head around. However, you’ll be pleased to hear that most visitors get to grips with it after a couple of days. And don’t worry, the Southern Hospitality will certainly make you feel right at home.

And finally, get stuck into the food scene

One thing’s for sure, in Alabama you won’t ever go hungry! You’ll find a wide range of foods ranging from tender yet hearty BBQ dishes in the North to an abundance of Cajun and unique dishes in the south. Portions are huge and even if you just want a salad, be prepared for an onslaught of additional toppings and generous helpings.

Biscuits and gravy, grits, unrivaled BBQ sauce, fried dishes, surf and turf, oysters, peach cobbler, pecan pies and sweet pastries and of course boiled peanuts (an Alabamian favorite). You’ll be utterly spoilt for choice in this totally mouth-watering state, so be prepared to take a few extra pounds home with you after your visit!
